Welcome to the ultimate Sri Lankan wildlife escape, curated by Nanda Tours for the true nature lover. This itinerary is a journey through some of the island’s most pristine and diverse ecosystems, offering a richer and more secluded safari experience. We will take you from the dense, leopard-filled jungles of Wilpattu in the north to the iconic elephant “Gathering” in Minneriya, and further to the untouched wilderness of Wasgamuwa. We add a unique cultural touch with a visit to the indigenous Vedda community in Mahiyanganaya before concluding in the elephant haven of Udawalawe. This is more than a holiday; it’s an expedition into the wild, filled with incredible animal encounters, breathtaking landscapes, and authentic cultural connections.

Itinerary
- You will be warmly greeted at the Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) by your Nanda Tours driver-guide.
- We will begin our journey north to the gateway of Wilpattu National Park (approx. 3–4-hour drive).
- After checking into your hotel, you can relax and soak in the tranquil, rustic atmosphere of the wilderness. Your guide will brief you on the adventure ahead.
- Overnight: Wilpattu/Nochchiyama.
- Today is dedicated to exploring the magnificent Wilpattu National Park. We’ll embark on a full-day safari (with a picnic lunch) to maximize our chances of sightings.
- Wilpattu is unique for its natural, sand-rimmed lakes called “villus.” We’ll search for its famous residents: leopards (who are often seen lounging on trees or by the villus), sloth bears, elephants, spotted deer, and a myriad of bird species. The park’s dense forest and less-crowded tracks offer a truly immersive safari experience.
- Overnight: Wilpattu/Nochchiyama.
- After a final morning activity or a leisurely breakfast, we travel to the Cultural Triangle, to our base near Habarana (approx. 2.5-3 hour drive).
- This afternoon is at your leisure. You can relax by the pool, take a short village walk, or opt for an optional activity like a hot air balloon ride (seasonal).
- Overnight: Habarana/Minneriya.
- Rise early for an exhilarating morning jeep safari in Minneriya National Park.
- The main attraction here is the world-famous “Gathering,” where hundreds of elephants from the surrounding forests come to the Minneriya tank to drink, feed, and socialize. It’s a phenomenal display of natural behavior, especially impressive between July and September.
- Even outside the Gathering season, Minneriya is excellent for spotting elephants and other wildlife like sambar deer and leopards.
- Overnight: Habarana/Minneriya.
- After breakfast, we head to one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful and unspoiled national parks, Wasgamuwa (approx. 2-hour drive).
- After checking into your hotel, we’ll embark on an afternoon safari. Wasgamuwa is bordered by two large rivers and is a mix of tropical forests, grasslands, and hills. It’s renowned for its large elephant herds and offers fantastic opportunities for wildlife photography without the crowds of other parks.
- Overnight: Wasgamuwa/Hettipola.
- Enjoy a final morning safari in Wasgamuwa to catch any wildlife you may have missed.
- Afterwards, we journey east to the town of Mahiyanganaya (approx. 2-2.5-hour drive), a region known for its rugged beauty and indigenous culture.
- Check into your hotel and enjoy the serene, rural landscape. In the evening, you can visit the Duvili Ella waterfall, a spectacular sight.
- Overnight: Mahiyanganaya.
- This morning, we have a unique cultural experience. We’ll visit the Dambana Vedda Village, home to Sri Lanka’s indigenous people, the Veddas (or “Wanniya-laeto” – ‘forest-dwellers’). You’ll have the opportunity to learn about their ancient traditions, hunting practices, and deep connection to the forest.
- After this insightful visit, we begin our scenic drive south to Udawalawe (approx. 4–5-hour drive). We’ll stop for lunch en route.
- Arrive in Udawalawe in the evening and check into your hotel.
- Overnight: Udawalawe.
- Rise early for a morning safari in Udawalawe National Park. The park’s open plains and scrubland make it one of the best places in the world to see wild elephants in their natural habitat. You are almost guaranteed to see multiple herds, including adorable calves.
- In the afternoon, we visit the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home. This ethical conservation center rehabilitates orphaned baby elephants before releasing them back into the wild. Watching the babies being fed is a heartwarming and unforgettable experience.
- Overnight: Udawalawe.
- Enjoy a final leisurely breakfast.
- Depending on your flight schedule, we will transfer you back to the Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) for your departure (approx. 3–4-hour drive), carrying with you incredible memories of Sri Lanka’s diverse wildlife and cultures.

- How is this tour different from a standard Yala safari tour? This tour focuses on the northern and central parks, which are generally less crowded than Yala. It offers a greater diversity of ecosystems, from Wilpattu’s dense forests to Wasgamuwa’s riverine habitats, and includes a unique cultural element not found on standard safari tours.
- Is this tour suitable for children? Yes, absolutely! The variety of animals and the visit to the Elephant Transit Home are fantastic for children. The driving times are manageable, and our guides are experienced in making the journey engaging for families.
- What are the realistic chances of seeing a leopard or sloth bear? Wilpattu is renowned for its leopard population, and while sightings are never guaranteed, your chances are very high, especially on a full-day safari. Sloth bears are more elusive but Wilpattu is one of the best parks to spot them. Patience and a good tracker are key!
- What is the accommodation like in these more remote areas? We use a carefully selected range of comfortable 3-star hotels, eco-lodges, and guesthouses. While they may not have the same level of luxury as a 5-star city hotel, they offer clean, comfortable rooms, great hospitality, and an authentic, close-to-nature experience.
