Itinerary

  • You will be warmly greeted at the Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) by your Nanda Tours driver-guide.
  • After a comfortable transfer to your hotel in Colombo or nearby Negombo, you can check in and relax after your flight.
  • In the evening, your guide will brief you about the exciting journey ahead. Depending on your arrival time, a short walk along Galle Face Green to watch the sunset can be arranged.
  • Overnight: Colombo/Negombo.

  • After breakfast, we’ll begin our journey to the Cultural Triangle (approx. 4-5 hour drive).
  • En route, we will stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple, a vast, isolated rock mass with five caves converted into shrines. The stunning Buddha statues and vivid ancient paintings are a perfect introduction to Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage.
  • After the visit, we’ll continue to your hotel in the Sigiriya area, allowing you to settle in and enjoy the serene, rural landscape.
  • Overnight: Sigiriya/Habarana.

  • Rise early to beat the heat and crowds for the highlight of your trip: climbing the Sigiriya Lion Rock. This ancient rock fortress and palace is a feat of engineering and artistry. Your guide will share the fascinating history as you ascend to the summit for unforgettable views.
  • In the afternoon, after lunch, we’ll visit the medieval capital of Polonnaruwa (approx. 1-hour drive). Explore the well-preserved ruins of this ancient city, including the impressive Gal Vihara rock statues of the Buddha, by bicycle or air-conditioned car.
  • Overnight: Sigiriya/Habarana.

  • Today we drive to the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, Kandy (approx. 2.5-3 hour drive).
  • On the way, we will stop at a local spice garden in Matale. Here you’ll see how spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and pepper are grown and learn about their Ayurvedic uses.
  • In Kandy, we’ll visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist shrine, which houses a tooth of the Buddha.
  • In the evening, you’ll be treated to a traditional Kandyan cultural dance show, a vibrant display of fire and acrobatic dances.
  • Overnight: Kandy.

  • After breakfast, our scenic ascent into the hill country begins (approx. 3-hour drive).
  • We’ll stop at a tea factory and plantation to learn about the process of Ceylon tea, from plucking the “two leaves and a bud” to tasting a perfectly brewed cup.
  • We’ll also visit the beautiful Ramboda Falls.
  • Arrive in Nuwara Eliya, a charming town with a colonial-era atmosphere, often called “Little England.” We’ll take a brief tour to see the well-kept lawns, Tudor-style houses, and the famous golf course.
  • Overnight: Nuwara Eliya.

  • This morning is dedicated to one of the most iconic travel experiences in the world. Your driver will take you to the Nanu Oya railway station to board the train to Ella.
  • The journey (approx. 3-4 hours) is spectacular, taking you through lush tea plantations, misty mountains, and across the iconic Nine Arches Bridge. (Note: We book 2nd or 3rd class observation seats for the most authentic experience. 1st class must be booked far in advance and is less flexible).
  • Your driver will meet you at Ella station and take you to your hotel. In the evening, enjoy a relaxed walk through the small, bohemian town of Ella.
  • Overnight: Ella.

  • A day to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Ella.
  • Early morning, we’ll take a gentle hike up Little Adam’s Peak for stunning sunrise views over the Ella Gap.
  • After breakfast, we’ll walk down to the famous Nine Arches Bridge, a magnificent architectural marvel set amidst the jungle and tea fields.
  • The afternoon is at your leisure. You can visit the Rawana Waterfall, relax in a cafe, or explore more trails.
  • Overnight: Ella.

  • Today is a travel day as we descend from the highlands to the southern coast (approx. 4-5 hour drive to Galle).
  • The landscape changes dramatically as we leave the mountains behind. We can stop for lunch at a local roadside restaurant.
  • Upon arrival in Galle, we’ll check into your hotel, likely located within or near the historic Galle Fort.
  • In the evening, take a guided walking tour of the fort, exploring its Dutch Reformed Church, lighthouse, and charming streets lined with boutiques and art galleries.
  • Overnight: Galle.

  • After a final morning stroll through Galle Fort, we take a short drive up the coast to the beach resort town of Bentota (approx. 1 hour).
  • The day is yours to relax and enjoy the Indian Ocean. You can lie on the golden sand, take a dip in the sea, or try some water sports like jet-skiing or banana boat riding (at your own expense).
  • A visit to the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery can be arranged, where you can learn about the conservation efforts for sea turtles.
  • Overnight: Bentota.

  • Enjoy a final leisurely Sri Lankan breakfast and a last dip in the ocean or pool.
  • Depending on your flight schedule, we will transfer you back to Colombo (approx. 2-2.5 hour drive).
  • If time permits, you can do some last-minute souvenir shopping in Colombo before we take you to the Bandaranaike International Airport for your departure, filled with memories of an incredible journey.
  • End of Tour.

Packing List

  • Clothing: Lightweight cotton/linen clothing. Long skirts or trousers and modest tops (covering shoulders) are required for temple visits. A light jacket or sweater for the cool evenings in Nuwara Eliya and Ella.
  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes/trainers are essential, especially for Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa. Sandals or flip-flops for the beach.
  • Health & Sun: High-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and insect repellent (especially for evenings). Any personal medications.
