  • Is the east coast safe to travel to? Yes, absolutely. The region has been peaceful and fully open to tourism for many years. It is a very safe and welcoming destination for travelers.
  • How is the east coast different from the south/west coast? The east coast is generally less developed and crowded, offering a more authentic and laid-back experience. The culture is also distinct, with a significant Tamil and Muslim population. Most importantly, its peak season is the European summer, making it the perfect alternative when the monsoon hits the south.
  • Do I need to be an experienced swimmer for snorkeling at Pigeon Island? Not at all. The waters around the island are generally calm, and there are areas suitable for all levels, including beginners. Your boatman will guide you to the best spots.
  • What is the food like on the east coast? Delicious! You’ll find incredible fresh seafood, as well as a unique blend of Sri Lankan and Tamil cuisine. Be sure to try the crab and prawn curries.
