Itinerary

  • You will be warmly greeted at the Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) by your Nanda Tours driver-guide.
  • We will begin our journey directly to the sacred city of Anuradhapura (approx. 4–5-hour drive), the cradle of Sri Lankan Buddhism.
  • After checking in at your hotel, you can relax and prepare for the spiritual journey ahead. In the evening, a quiet visit to the banks of the Tissa Wewa reservoir is a peaceful way to start.
  • Overnight: Anuradhapura.

  • After breakfast, we dedicate the day to exploring the vast, UNESCO-listed sacred city.
  • Our pilgrimage will begin at the Sri Maha Bodhi, the most sacred site in Anuradhapura. We will then visit the colossal stupas of Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanaramaya, and Abhayagiriya. We’ll also see the serene Samadhi Buddha statue and the ruins of ancient palaces and monasteries.
  • This is a day for quiet reflection and absorbing over 2,000 years of history.
  • Overnight: Anuradhapura.

  • Early morning, we will make the short drive to Mihintale, the mountain where Mahinda, the son of Emperor Ashoka, preached Buddhism to King Devanampiyatissa in 247 BC.
  • We will climb the 1,840 granite steps to the summit, visiting the Ambasthala Dagoba, the Kantaka Chetiya, and the serene Aradhana Gala (Meditation Rock) with its breathtaking views.
  • In the afternoon, we will travel to the Sigiriya area (approx. 2-hour drive), our base for the next two nights.
  • Overnight: Sigiriya/Habarana.

  • Rise early to climb the magnificent Sigiriya Lion Rock. This 5th-century fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a wonder of ancient engineering, artistry, and urban planning.
  • In the afternoon, after lunch, we will visit the medieval capital of Polonnaruwa (approx. 1-hour drive). We will explore its well-preserved ruins, including the iconic Gal Vihara with its sublime rock-carved Buddha statues, the Royal Palace, and the circular Vatadage.
  • Overnight: Sigiriya/Habarana.

  • After breakfast, we will visit the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple, a sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries. This vast, isolated rock is home to five caves, all converted into shrines filled with stunning statues and intricate ceiling murals.
  • We will then journey to the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, Kandy (approx. 2.5-3-hour drive). En route, we will stop at a spice garden in Matale.
  • In the evening, we will visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic to witness the evening “pooja” (ceremony), a deeply spiritual and atmospheric experience.
  • Overnight: Kandy.

  • Today we will have a more relaxed morning, perhaps visiting the beautiful Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya or the Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha statue for panoramic views of the city.
  • The afternoon is at your leisure for personal exploration, meditation, or shopping for traditional crafts.
  • Overnight: Kandy.

  • After breakfast, we will embark on a scenic drive down to the sacred city of Kataragama in the deep south (approx. 4–5-hour drive).
  • After checking in at your hotel, the afternoon is for rest. In the evening, we will visit the Kataragama Sacred Complex. Here, you will witness the vibrant evening pooja at the Kataragama Devale (shrine dedicated to the god Kataragama), a powerful and multi-sensory experience where devotees make offerings of fruit and flowers.
  • Overnight: Kataragama.

  • This morning, you have the option to return to the sacred complex for further exploration. You can visit the Kiri Vehera (a Buddhist stupa) and the adjacent Hindu kovils, observing the beautiful harmony of different faiths.
  • After lunch, we will begin our journey back towards the west coast (approx. 4–5-hour drive), staying overnight in a convenient location like Negombo to ensure a stress-free final day.
  • Overnight: Negombo.

  • Enjoy a final leisurely Sri Lankan breakfast.
  • At the appropriate time, your driver-guide will transfer you to the nearby Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) for your departure flight, carrying with you a sense of peace and a profound connection to Sri Lanka’s spiritual heritage.
  • End of Tour.

Packing List

  • Clothing: Lightweight, modest clothing is essential. All visitors must have their shoulders and knees covered to enter temples. Women should carry a scarf or sarong for easy cover-up. A light jacket for cool evenings in Kandy.
  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes/trainers are a must. Crucially, wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off, as you will be removing them for every temple visit.
  • Respectful Items: A light scarf or sarong is invaluable for temple visits.
  • Essentials: Camera, power bank, universal travel adapter, and a reusable water bottle.
  • For Offerings: You may wish to have small notes to purchase flowers or lotus offerings at the temples, which is a beautiful way to participate.

  • Is this tour suitable for non-Buddhists? Absolutely. While the focus is on Buddhist heritage, this is a profound cultural and historical journey that anyone with an interest in ancient civilizations, architecture, and spirituality will deeply appreciate.
  • How physically demanding is this tour? This tour involves a significant amount of walking and climbing, most notably at Mihintale (over 1,800 steps) and Sigiriya. A moderate level of fitness is required to fully enjoy the experience.
  • What is the proper etiquette for visiting temples? Respect is paramount. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), remove all shoes and hats before entering, and never turn your back directly to a Buddha statue when taking photos. Your guide will remind you of these customs.
  • Can we participate in the ceremonies? Yes, and it is encouraged. You can purchase lotus flowers or oil lamps as offerings at most temples. Your guide can explain the significance and process. Participating in the evening pooja at the Temple of the Tooth or Kataragama is a memorable experience.
