Welcome to the soul of Sri Lanka, curated by Nanda Tours. This tour is an ode to the island’s magnificent highlands, a world away from the tropical heat of the coast. We will guide you on a journey through rolling green carpets of tea, where colonial-era bungalows dot the landscape and waterfalls tumble down misty valleys. Your adventure begins in the cultural capital of Kandy and ascends to the cool, Tudor-style town of Nuwara Eliya. You’ll then experience the iconic train journey to the bohemian charm of Ella, before discovering the dramatic, sweeping vistas from Haputale. This is a tour for slowing down, breathing deeply, and soaking in some of the most beautiful scenery on earth.

Journey to the viewpoint where Sir Thomas Lipton would survey his vast tea empire, offering a 360-degree panorama of the highlands.

Itinerary

  • You will be warmly greeted at the Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) by your Nanda Tours driver-guide.
  • We will begin our journey to the gateway to the hill country, the city of Kandy (approx. 3-4 hour drive).
  • After checking in and relaxing, your guide will brief you on the beautiful journey ahead. In the evening, you can take a leisurely stroll around the Kandy Lake.
  • Overnight: Kandy.

  • After breakfast, we’ll visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Lanka’s most venerated Buddhist shrine. We’ll time our visit to witness part of the evening pooja (ceremony), a deeply spiritual experience.
  • In the evening, you’ll be treated to a vibrant Kandyan cultural dance show, a spectacular display of traditional music and fiery acrobatics.
  • Overnight: Kandy.

  • Today we ascend into the cool highlands (approx. 3-hour drive). The scenery transforms as we leave the plains behind.
  • We will stop at a tea factory and plantation to learn about the process of Ceylon tea, from plucking the “two leaves and a bud” to tasting a perfectly brewed cup.
  • We’ll also visit the beautiful Ramboda Falls on our way.
  • Arrive in Nuwara Eliya, a charming town with a colonial-era atmosphere, often called “Little England.” We’ll take a brief tour to see the Gregory Lake and the famous red-brick post office.
  • Overnight: Nuwara Eliya.

  • This morning is dedicated to one of the most iconic travel experiences in the world. Your driver will take you to the Nanu Oya railway station to board the train to Ella.
  • The journey (approx. 3-4 hours) is spectacular, taking you through lush tea plantations, misty mountains, and across the iconic Nine Arches Bridge. (Note: We book 2nd or 3rd class observation seats for the most authentic experience. 1st class must be booked far in advance and is less flexible).
  • Your driver will meet you at Ella station and take you to your hotel. In the evening, enjoy a relaxed walk through the small, bohemian town of Ella.
  • Overnight: Ella.

  • A day to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Ella.
  • Early morning, we’ll take a gentle hike up Little Adam’s Peak for stunning sunrise views over the Ella Gap.
  • After breakfast, we’ll walk down to the famous Nine Arches Bridge, a magnificent architectural marvel set amidst the jungle and tea fields.
  • The afternoon is at your leisure. You can visit the Rawana Waterfall, relax in a cafe, or explore more trails.
  • Overnight: Ella.

  • After breakfast, we take a short, scenic drive to the quieter, more dramatic hill station of Haputale (approx. 1.5-2 hour drive).
  • Check into your hotel, which will likely have stunning views over the valleys. In the afternoon, we’ll take a tuk-tuk or jeep up to Lipton’s Seat, the famous viewpoint where Sir Thomas Lipton used to admire his tea plantations. The views are absolutely breathtaking, especially in the late afternoon light.
  • Overnight: Haputale.

  • Enjoy a final leisurely breakfast and one last look at the magnificent highland scenery.
  • Today, we will transfer you back to the Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) for your departure flight (approx. 5-6 hour drive). We will stop for lunch en route.
  • End of Tour.

Packing List

  • Clothing: This is key. Pack in layers. T-shirts and light trousers for the day, but you will absolutely need a warm fleece, jacket, or sweater for the cool evenings and early mornings in Nuwara Eliya and Ella.
  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes/trainers are essential for the hikes. Sandals or flip-flops for general wear.
  • Health & Sun: High-SPF sunscreen (the sun is strong at altitude), sunglasses, and a hat. Insect repellent for evenings.
  • Essentials: Camera with extra batteries and memory cards (you’ll need them!), power bank, and a universal travel adapter.
  • Rain Gear: A light rain jacket or travel umbrella is advisable, as showers can occur at any time in the hills.

  • How cold does it get in the hill country? During the day, it’s pleasantly mild. However, in the evenings and early mornings, especially in Nuwara Eliya, temperatures can drop to around 10-15°C (50-59°F). A warm jacket is essential.
  • How difficult are the hikes in Ella? The hike to Little Adam’s Peak is relatively easy and suitable for most fitness levels, including families with children. It takes about 45-60 minutes to reach the summit.
  • Will we get good seats on the train? We will assist in procuring the best available tickets in the 2nd or 3rd class observation car, which offers open doors and windows for the best views and photos. Be prepared for the train to be crowded, which is all part of the authentic experience!
  • Is this tour suitable for solo travelers? Absolutely. The hill country is a safe and welcoming region. The shared experiences on the train and the friendly guesthouses make it easy to meet other travelers.
