Itinerary

  • You will be warmly greeted at the Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) by your Nanda Tours driver-guide.
  • We’ll head directly to the adventure capital of Kitulgala (approx. 2.5-3-hour drive), leaving the city behind in a blur of green.
  • After checking into your rustic lodge, you’ll have a full briefing on tomorrow’s white-water rafting adventure.
  • Overnight: Kitulgala.

  • After a hearty breakfast, it’s time for the main event. Gear up and take on the thrilling rapids of the Kelani River. This 5km run includes exciting grade III and IV rapids, guaranteed to get your adrenaline pumping.
  • In the afternoon, for those who want more, we can arrange optional canyoning or abseiling down a waterfall.
  • Overnight: Kitulgala.

  • Today we travel to the trailhead of the Knuckles Mountain Range (approx. 3–4-hour drive). The landscape becomes more rugged and remote.
  • We’ll check into a basic eco-lodge or a campsite, your base for the next two nights. In the afternoon, take a short acclimatization trek to prepare for tomorrow’s challenge.
  • Overnight: Knuckles (Eco-lodge/Camping).

  • Today is for the true adventurers. We’ll embark on a full-day, challenging trek through the heart of the Knuckles Range.
  • This is a tough but incredibly rewarding hike through dense forests, paddy fields, and remote villages, offering stunning, untouched scenery. Your expert trekking guide will lead the way.
  • This is a physically demanding day, but the sense of accomplishment is immense.
  • Overnight: Knuckles (Eco-lodge/Camping).

  • After a final morning in the hills, we’ll travel to the city of Kandy (approx. 3–4-hour drive).
  • This is your well-earned rest day. Check into your comfortable hotel and relax. In the evening, we’ll visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic for a dose of serene culture, a perfect contrast to the wilderness.
  • Overnight: Kandy.

  • This morning, your driver will take you to the train station for the iconic journey to Ella.
  • Your driver will meet you in Ella and take you to your hotel. In the evening, stretch your legs with a sunset hike to Little Adam’s Peak.

  • After a morning hike to the more challenging Ella Rock for epic views, we begin the long drive to the east coast (approx. 5–6-hour drive).
  • Arrive in Arugam Bay, the legendary surf town. The vibe here is laid-back, bohemian, and all about the ocean.
  • Check into your hotel and soak in the atmosphere.
  • Overnight: Arugam Bay.

  • Today is all about the surf. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a total beginner, “A-Bay” has a break for you.
  • We’ll arrange a surfing lesson with a local expert to get you standing on your board. For advanced surfers, your guide can take you to the famous points like “Main Reef” or “Pottuvil Point.”
  • Spend the rest of the day riding waves, chilling in beachside cafes, and enjoying the unique vibe.
  • Overnight: Arugam Bay.

  • Enjoy a final morning surf or a relaxing swim.
  • Today is a long travel day back to Colombo (approx. 6–7-hour drive). Note: For an additional cost, a domestic flight from nearby Batticaloa (BTC) to Colombo (CMB) can be arranged to save a full day of travel.
  • You will be transferred to the Bandaranaike International Airport for your departure flight, exhausted, exhilarated, and full of incredible stories.
  • End of Tour.

Packing List

  • Clothing: Quick-dry t-shirts and shorts/leggings. A lightweight waterproof jacket. Sturdy hiking pants/shorts.
  • Footwear: Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots are essential for the Knuckles trek. Sandals/flip-flops for towns. Water shoes for rafting.
  • Adventure Gear: A good quality backpack (30-40L) for the Knuckles trek, headlamp, basic first-aid kit (with blister plasters!), and a dry bag.
  • Health & Sun: High-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and strong insect repellent (especially for Knuckles).
  • Essentials: Power bank, universal travel adapter, and multiple reusable water bottles or a hydration bladder.

  • How fit do I need to be for this tour? A moderate to high level of fitness is required, especially for the Knuckles trek, which is long and challenging. The rafting and surfing are less dependent on fitness but more on being comfortable in water.
  • Is the white-water rafting safe? Absolutely. We use a reputable, internationally certified rafting company with top-quality safety equipment and experienced guides. A full safety briefing is given before you get on the water.
  • I’ve never surfed before. Can I still join? Yes! The beginner surfing lesson in Arugam Bay is perfect for first-timers. The instructors are excellent at getting you up and riding your first wave.
  • What is the accommodation like in Knuckles? The accommodation in the Knuckles Range is basic but comfortable. It’s typically an eco-lodge or organized camping with shared facilities. This is part of the authentic wilderness experience.
